Pushparaj Utharampillai

More than four decades of hands-on experience across steel broking, trading, importing, processing, building and manufacturing.

Born in Bandarawela in 1963 and educated at St. Mary's College, Pushparaj Utharampillai began his career in steel after moving to Colombo in 1978. His early years as a steel broker gave him a practical grounding in the industry and the relationships that would shape his career.

After co-founding a steel business in 1985, he established Union Steel Pvt Ltd in 1988, specialising in steel imports and trading. He later founded Union Steel Industries in 1996, expanding into coil cutting and steel processing.

In 2000, he established Sonic Steel Industries, helping pioneer cut-to-length facilities for steel coils and sheets before expanding further into wire nail manufacturing. In 2002, he became the exclusive importer of Tata Steelium in Sri Lanka.

Under his leadership, Sonic Steel continued to expand its manufacturing portfolio. His approach remains grounded in product knowledge, honesty, persistence and a long-term commitment to the steel industry.

Aadavan Pushparaj

Aadavan Pushparaj was educated at Colombo International School before completing a Bachelor's degree in Finance at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

His leadership experience developed early through academics and sport. During his school years, he captained multiple sports teams and represented Sri Lanka in tennis, experiences that helped shape a calm, disciplined approach to teamwork and decision-making.

As Director and Chief Operating Officer, Aadavan is involved in the day-to-day operation and continued development of Sonic Steel Industries. His role brings together operational oversight, commercial relationships and a focus on improving how the company works across functions.
