The beginning
Pushparaj Utharampillai, born in 1963, moves to Colombo from Bandarawella to begin his career in steel as a steel broker.

First business venture
After years of industry experience, he co-founds a steel business with five partners, his first venture as an entrepreneur.
1988
Union Steel Pvt Ltd
Pushparaj leaves the partnership to establish Union Steel Pvt Ltd on his own, specialising in steel imports and trading.
1996
Into processing
Union Steel Industries is founded as a semi-industrial operation specialising in coil cutting.
2000
Sonic Steel Industries
Sonic Steel Industries is established, expanding the business from steel trading and processing into manufacturing. Cut-to-length processing for steel coils and sheets is introduced alongside the launch of Sonic-branded wire nails.
2007
Tata Steelium Launch
Tata Steelium is launched in Sri Lanka with Sonic Steel as a local distribution and processing partner for the branded cold-rolled steel range. Pushparaj represents Sonic Steel alongside Tata Steel’s Flat Products leadership at the launch in Colombo and is recognised that year as Tata Steelium’s International Distributor of the Year. The event took place in Water's Edge, Colombo.
